Shaker High School Freshman have message and GET WELL Cards for ACCFCB Kids.....

Shaker High School 9th grade student, Maritza Garcia learned of the plight of our seriously ill children from reading their stories on  www.accfcb.org. She, along with other students in Mrs. Karen DeSorbo's class decided to write letters and cards for them because they "just wanted to make them feel happy".

We are very grateful to all of the Shaker High students who participated in this very kind and thoughtful gesture. We will send the many cards and letters to our children and it will certainly "make them feel happy" indeed!

We take this opportunity to say a very big THANK YOU to Maritza, her sister Melisa, Mrs. DeSorbo and all of the students who participated in creating them and for showing a very genuine concern for the well being of others! Maritza's final request was for us to "tell the kids I said get well". We certainly will!

Aiden was born on Thanksgiving 2009 with Gastroschesis (Intestines outside of his body) and remained in Albany Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit since his birth. After finally being released on March 22, 2010 after a 117 day stay, he was re-admitted for 23 more days undergoing more surgery and procedures. He thankfully dodged his last surgery after internal bleeding stopped.  

Due to Aiden's condition, normal childhood ailments may cause problems for him and he will be monitored closely by doctors.

ACCFCB once again extends our Deep Appreciation and Thanks to: Lieutenant James Karam of the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office for helping this young family on behalf of our organization! (James was previously instrumental in assisting "Connor Moran" on behalf of ACCFCB as well).

Hunter returned HOME on May 22, 2010 after a grueling hip surgery that will sideline him to a wheelchair or bed for 3 month. Hunter is a tough young man who will undoubtedly get back on his feet again and we will be there for Hunter along his grueling recovery path.

 

On May 11, 2010 Hunter underwent extensive hip surgery with a very LONG recovery ahead- many months of bed rest and then A YEAR of Physical Therapy. He is on a CPM (machine that keeps his leg in constant motion) to help his healing- "WAY more time than planned for" according to Noelle, Hunter's mom. Hunter's family wishes to thank everyone for all of your thoughts and prayers. They also pray that Hunter remains fixator free- (surgery to place rod through hip to stabilize) and that his bone survives and heals in the coming months.

 

During Hunter's surgery when they dislocated the bone to resurface the femoral head (ball of hip), the middle of the bone peeled off- This changed everything. Surgeons needed to cut the bone into three sections, to get rid of the unstable part and then screwed the 2 remaining parts together. Risky because it could cause the entire femoral head to die but there was no other choice. 

 

Hunter will be non weight bearing for 3 months either bedridden or in a wheel chair. Pre-surgery it was only supposed to be a week then gradually adding weight. If the bone heals and the blood supplies stay, Hunter will then start his year of intense PT to get him walking again.

At the age of 8, Hunter complained of leg pain which doctors diagnosed as Bi-Lateral Legg-Calve Perthes Disease- (a rare disease that causes bone death in the ball of both hips due to a lack of blood flow). He went from being a very active child to confinement in a wheelchair.

 

Hunter had surgery in January 2007 and spent 5 months recovering @ Sinai Hosp in Baltimore, Maryland. He was finally able to come home in May to face a year long extensive Physical Therapy regiment.

 

On July 6, 2007, Hunter received the Albany County Correctional Facility for Children's Benefit's "Courage Award" at our 3rd annual "TEED OFF FOR TOT'S" Golf Classic Event. The award highlighted the tremendous courage Hunter displayed during his long ordeal and was well DESERVED!

Baby Aiden Will NOT Have Surgery.....

   

Aiden Torres was released from AMCH PICU Yesterday, May 12, 2010 after a 10 day stay and is resting comfortably at home. His bleeding appears to have stopped- Your prayers helped! Aiden will be monitored from home and thankfully did not have to undergo surgery as was previously planned for this week.

Aiden Torres, previously released From Albany Medical Center Hospital April 30, 2010 after a 13 day stay was readmitted Monday, May 3 due to complications from bleeding through his rectum. Another battery of tests were run and an Ulcer was discovered inside part of his intestines. Aiden was scheduled to undergo surgery as soon as Today or Friday (May 14) to remove the Ulcerated part of his intestine. Prayers for Aiden and his family were requested.
