Sa'fyre Terry continues to be a fighter and her recovery so far has been tremendous according to Elizabeth Dolder (Liz), Sa'fyre's Aunt and Legal guardian. Sa'fyre is participating in physical therapy at Westchester Medical Center's burn unit, meaning that she is awake, aware & interacting with the staff & her family. Her face is healing & her eyesight is intact; She still has a trach & a feeding tube so she can't talk. Liz and Sa'fyre finally got to hug each other for the first time recently and both cried tears of joy.
Unfortunately where there is recovery there are also the devastating infections as a result of her burns. Sa'fyre received extensive skin grafting on her face and knee. She has lost her right hand, right wrist and toes from her left foot. Doctors are currently treating an infection near her left knee & hope they are successful otherwise the left leg from the knee down will need to be taken.
On July 20, 2013, Liz shared with us raw emotion- "Seen Sa'fyre yesterday and she just looked awful. She had an operation on Wednesday and they did remove her toes on her left foot and did extensive grafting on her face and knee. When I walked in her room it was almost like seeing her for the first time. But in order for her to get better she has to have this done I understand but it still breaks my heart. Sa'fyre was unresponsive and could not see very well. Everytime she takes 5 steps forward she has another operation and goes back 4 steps...after they graft they have to stop the physical therapy for a week. The good thing is that she shows more and more improvement each time. Thank You, Liz"
Sa'fyre may be moved to Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston sometime in the next month or so.
